Cannabis sativa
Cannabaceae
Cannabis sativa is a fast-growing herbaceous plant native to Central Asia, now cultivated worldwide. In Ayurveda, it is known as Vijaya, meaning “the victorious one,” and is traditionally used in controlled, purified forms for therapeutic purposes. The plant contains a wide range of cannabinoids, notably THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), which influence various physiological processes via the endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a key regulator of mood, pain, appetite, and immune function.
